About Southbank

VIC 3006

Southbank is an inner urban neighbourhood of Melbourne, 1 km south of the Melbourne central business district. The small suburb of Southbank is situated on the southern side of the Yarra River. Southbank includes Southbank Promenade that stretches from Southgate shopping and dining complex to Queensbridge Square. The parade has many cafes, restaurants, shops, luxury hotels, offices, public art and modern apartments. The variety and spectacular city views make it a popular place for locals and visitors to drink, dine, stroll and watch the occasional street performer.

Southbank is an important cultural hub and home to:

  • Melbourne Arts Centre

  • Hamer Hall

  • Melbourne Recital Centre

  • National Gallery of Victoria

  • Malthouse Theatre

  • Australian Centre for Contemporary Art

  • Victorian College of the Arts.

Significant and rapid residential development has occurred in Southbank and the population has skyrocketed. The vast majority of residents live in high-rise apartments. It is also one of the most densely populated areas of Melbourne, with a large cluster of apartment towers, including some of the world's tallest solely residential buildings. One of them is the Australia 108 -- Australia's tallest tower measured to its highest floor, which exceeds the records held by the famous 300-metre-tall Eureka Tower.
